El Médano

Come to the south of Tenerife

El Médano, Tenerife

Dominated by the wind and constant waves

A beautiful little coastal village nestled on the south coast of Tenerife, which, together with Arenas del Mar, El Cabezo, El Topo and Ensenada Pelada, belongs to the municipality of Granadilla de Abona.

Its name comes from the term «médano», which means dune, due to the presence of these natural formations in the area.

There are millions of routes and trails you can take while you are here, of varying levels and distances. You can start by climbing Montaña Roja, the town’s sacred volcano, enjoying excellent views of the town, the sea and Teide, or you can descend and reach the next beach called La Tejita, a whole kilometre of sea and sand, one of the largest and least crowded beaches on the island, allowing you to truly enjoy a close connection with nature, peace and quiet. You can also take another excursion to Montaña Pelada, another volcano on the other side of the village, from where you can access hidden beaches.

Yoga

If you love this practice or would like to try it for the first time, there are classes held two or three times a week by the sea, a wonderful experience of connecting with nature, relaxation and peace. Classes can be in Spanish or English.

Party

La Romería Barquera is celebrated on 15 September in the fishing village of El Médano. As they do every year, pilgrims dressed in traditional fishermen’s costumes accompany the patron saint, Nuestra Señora De Las Mercedes y Rojas, to the beach, where the emotional embarkation takes place. This is one of the most exciting traditional pilgrimages on the island, where you can also enjoy the music of the parrandas and the delicious Canarian food prepared by the locals for the day.
